National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities International
We promote consistency of application of standards and enforcement across the country. In our 30-year history we have developed professional reputation of the elevator safety inspector. The striving towards this has been accomplished, in part by the training programs of accreditation and annual workshops in which a wide range of manufacturers, suppliers, designers, inventors, consultants and contractors have had the opportunity of presenting current information concerning codes, standards, safety devices and techniques. In 1987, NAESA was first to be accredited under the Q.E.I. Program by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and currently certified over 1400 qualified elevator inspectors. Of equal importance has been the purpose of engaging in activities and establishing programs to exchange and impart information of common interest. NAESA embraced an open door " policy from the outset, seeking advice and participation from the National Association of Elevator Contractors and the industry’s trade publications. Representatives from the International Union of Elevator Constructors and elevator consulting engineer groups were involved. There was interaction with suppliers. In recent years, NAESA International in cooperation with the A17 Committee became a major contributer to code changes and enhancements.

NAESA membership is now worldwide with over 1300 members, consisting of the majority of the states and governing bodies either through individual membership or the governing bodies themselves.

Elevator World Magazine

Elevator World, Inc., publisher of ELEVATOR WORLD magazine, was founded in January 1953 by William C. Sturgeon, partner and president of Mobile Elevator & Equipment Company, a contracting firm operating in three southern states. "ELEVATOR WORLD, the industry's first trade publication was created and sustained as a hobby, the bulk of activity by my wife, Mary Sands, and myself being at night and on weekends." ... William C. Sturgeon From 1953 until 1963, Sturgeon remained with Mobile Elevator & Equipment Company, while publishing ELEVATOR WORLD. During those early days he wore two hats . . . "trying to gain advertising, subscriptions and editorial support from an entire industry, even while competing in the contracting business with some of the very companies whose help was needed." ... William C. Sturgeon

In 1963, after selling his contracting firm to Montgomery Elevator Company, William Sturgeon became the full-time publisher and editor of ELEVATOR WORLD. At the very beginning, ELEVATOR WORLD depended on the advertising of companies who supplied components and systems to the elevator companies, and the bulk of the readership was made up of contractors. In time, readership and the advertiser base expanded to include elevator industry members, as well as architects, inspectors, consultants, building owner/managers, engineers, government officials and the list goes on and on.

Active in the company since 1965, Ricia Sturgeon Hendrick, William Sturgeon's daughter, was named publisher of ELEVATOR WORLD in 1986 and in 1995 assumed the presidency. Hendrick, now joined by her son, T. Bruce MacKinnon, associate director, continues William Sturgeon's vision to inform, to educate and to unite those involved in the building transportation industry.

Robert "Bob" Caporale joined ELEVATOR WORLD as associate editor in 1993, after a successful career as a vertical transportation professional. In 1998, Caporale was named editor. Sturgeon retired from that position, staying on as chairman of the Board.
